Details:

This workshop, organised by the Pears Institute and the first in a series, will consider Muslims and Jews: Citizenship, Identity and Prejudice in the British context.

In the course of the workshop we intend to explore the following:

- The ways Muslims and Jews understand multiculturalism and respond to it
- The phenomena of Islamophobia, racism and antisemitism in the context of multicultural Britain
- The relationship, if any, of multicultural politics to representations of Israel and to understanding in Britain of the conflict between Israel and Palestine

These are issues of obvious import in Britain where the politics and practice of multiculturalism is a continuing focus of controversy. They also have considerable significance in the Middle East, in Europe and in the United States. The aim of the workshop is to contribute to our understanding of the politics of multiculturalism and to advance understanding of the politics of the Israel/Palestine conflict as it is enacted in Britain.

Subsequent workshops will be held in Haifa, Paris, Berlin, and New York.

This initiative was devised in collaboration with the Herzl Institute for the Research and Study of Zionism, University of Haifa. Three other research centres have joined the project: the Centre national de la recherche scientifique, Paris; Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung, TU, Berlin; and the Taub Center for Israel Studies, New York University
